Mount Beauty is not a crowded place by any means; its chilled atmosphere is what gives it its laid-back vibe. But if you're really looking to sneak away from it all – and get your mountain views too – the tiny town of Tawonga, just 8km up the road, is where we recommend you stay.
The small rural town of Tawonga is the oldest colonial settlement in the Kiewa Valley with a pastoral history dating back to the 1840s. These days it is a quiet pocket of the valley with some of the best views going round. Tawonga, which is said to mean 'flight through the air' in the language of the First Peoples of the Country, has wide-open views of Victoria's highest mountain, Mount Bogong – named by Europeans after the word for 'brown moth' in Dhudhuroa – and the Kiewa River. Tawonga is a great place to base yourself to slow the pace down, take a stroll along the river, go for a bike ride, go fishing and have a cuppa at the general store, all with the splendor of uninterrupted mountain views.
