The Kiewa River rises in forest in the Alpine National Park as the east and west branches and join on the narrow flood plain at Mount Beauty township. The river then flows through farmland with the valley widening in the lower reaches, providing ample opportunity to access the river and throw a line in. Rivers in these areas have excellent in stream habitat with the predominant species being brown and rainbow trout. Click here for a map of the Kiewa Fishing locations.
Before you head out remember to pick up a Recreational Fishing Licence (RFL) which covers, all forms of recreational fishing in all of Victoria's marine, estuarine and freshwaters and is required for anyone aged between 18 and 70. You can purchase your license online or if you are already in Mount Beauty drop into Rocky Valley Bikes and Snowsports where you can purchase your fishing license, fishing gear and tackle or get some friendly local advice. The turn off to the Mount Beauty Pondage is located in Mount Beauty, along the Kiewa Valley Hwy. Turn into Embankment Drive where there are numerous access points. There are toilets, picnic tables, walking tracks and a fireplace with the target species being trout and redfin.
Located at Bogong Village, 14.9km south-east of Mount Beauty, on the Bogong High Plains Rd. Complete with toilets, picnic tables and fireplace/ barbeque it makes a lovely picturesque spot to throw a line. The target species at Lake Guy is trout.
There are numerous picnic tables and gravel boat access in dry weather, although bank fishing is most popular here. During winter months, there is no access to this site. The turn off is located 33.9km south-east of Mount Beauty along the Bogong High Plains Rd and 1.4km from the Falls Creek Township. The target fish is trout.
The streams and rivers close during winter from Queens birthday weekend at the start of June to the first weekend in September. During this time, anglers can still fish for trout and salmon in Victorian lakes and reservoirs, which remain open year round.
